UK Secretary of State Vince Cable announces £125M of new training funds
Today at the University of Edinbugh, Dr. Vince Cable, the UK Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills announced £125M in new PhD training funds across the UK.
Edinburgh, October 3, 2014 - In a visit to The Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Dr. Vince Cable revealed that a total investment of £14.5M of BBSRC and university funds are allocated to the EASTBIO PhD training partnership of which the University of Edinburgh is a partner. Other partners include the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, and St Andrews. EASTBIO is led by the University of Edinburgh’s School of Biological Sciences and includes as associate partners the Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance (SULSA), James Hutton Institute and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC).
The Spoel Research Group participated in an interactive visit with Dr. Cable. Group leader Steven Spoel and BBSRC-funded PhD student Sophie Kneeshaw demonstrated some of the ongoing research and explained the importance of fundamental research into the plant immune system for the design of future crop protection strategies.
